"Roller Coaster"

"On this day in 1884, the first roller coaster in America opens at Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York. Known as a switchback railway, it was the brainchild of LaMarcus Thompson, traveled approximately six miles per hour and cost a nickel to ride. The new entertainment was an instant success and by the turn of the century there were hundreds of roller coasters around the country."

Below are pictures of me in the early 40's with my Mom standing in front of the Roller Coaster at Riverside Park in Massachusetts..I remember going on that ride and was not too happy about it.. I think it cost .25 cents at that time. Don't know why I remember that..
The other picture was taken in the parking lot with my Mom, Aunt Helen and my Dad.. That parking lot was a giant cement swimming area closed. It had a huge fountain in the middle...
